Whale Watch Tenerife and HappyWhale Collaboration

Whale Watch Tenerife is pleased to announce our latest collaboration in cetacean conservation with the whale research organisation HappyWhale. This latest collaboration is another step in our goals to offer sustainable whale watching tours that support cetacean research and conservation in Tenerife and internationally. We feel it is very important to collaborate with international organisations that collect data on the whales throughout their migration range. Cetacean conservation is only effective when applied to the whole migrational range of any whale or dolphin species.

So, what does HappyWhale do?

HappyWhale provides a platform (website) where organisations and whale watchers can upload pictures of individual cetaceans. The result for the participants is very interesting. Once an image of a whale has been uploaded to HappyWhale it is included in the database and participants can see where and when the same whale has been spotted in the past. Additionally, future observations of this same whale are shared with participants. In this way, participants can get a more accurate idea of the whales migration.

whale fluke identification research projectHappyWhale declares its mission as:

“HappyWhale inspires kinship between humans and marine life through whale citizen science.”

A more detailed description of Happywhale – reproduced from its website:

“Happywhale tracks individual whales throughout our world’s oceans. We believe that whale watching guides, naturalists and passengers are vital to our understanding of whales. Scientists can only be in one place at one time; by harnessing the power of millions of whale watching enthusiasts, we can expand our scientific knowledge exponentially.”

Whale Watch Tenerife will be uploading images taken on our tours to the HappyWhale database with the hope that we can help in the research and conservation of whales and dolphins. We applaud HappyWhale in its efforts to bring whale watching enthusiasts together for the benefit and long-term monitoring of whales.
